Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

GA4 is the current standard if you created a property after October 2020.

Steps:

  1. Go to Google Analytics and log in.
  2. Select the property you want to track.
  3. Click Admin (gear icon) in the bottom-left corner.
  4. Under the Property column, click Data Streams.
  5. Click the web stream you want to track (your website).
  6. On the web stream details page
  7. View Tag Instructions
  8. Click on the Install Manually Tab

Tracking Section – New Tab

Add a new tab in the Tracking section

Tab name (recommended):

  • Google tag (gtag.js) (Matches the official commented code: )

Alternative tab names (also acceptable):

  • Google Tag
  • Google Analytics
  • Google Measurement Tag
  • Google Tag Manager (only if GTM container is used)

Tab Purpose

This tab is used to store and manage the Google tag (gtag.js) tracking code, including:

  • Google Analytics (GA4)
  • Google Ads conversion tracking
  • Google remarketing tags
  • Other Google measurement services that rely on gtag.js

Section Placement Guidance

  • Tracking Use this if the tag is primarily for analytics and measurement (GA4, event tracking, conversions).
  • Marketing Place it under Marketing if Google Tag Manager or gtag.js is being used for re-marketing, ads, or audience tracking (e.g. Google Ads, remarketing pixels).
